It seems like just yesterday: I was thumbing through my favorite magazine in search of new hairstyles, only to find myself in utter disbelief at the sight of the outrageously tall, untamed do’s worn by most of the models. I think the year was 1989…no, wait – it really was only yesterday!

The magazine: Marie Claire. The models: Otherwise lovely girls that walked in recent Marc Jacobs and Roberto Cavalli shows. And for the record, that 80s comment isn’t meant to be catty. It’s just that something about looking at these styles instantly transports me back to that era, when fashion magazines featured photos of hairstyles most women wouldn’t dream of emulating in real life.
According to this Marie Claire feature, “High-volume hair is a hit this season.” Furthermore, it’s been spotted at numerous shows as of late (evidenced by the photos). Since the models who sport this look are representing some pretty influential designers (as mentioned above), I suppose that some will opt to follow the trend – to a point.

That said, if women in the real world really start embracing “the higher the hair, the closer to heaven” concept in a big way, I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong. So, runway stylists, let’s compromise; how about we promote height within reason? I’m all for some volume, especially the soft waves achieved by none other than Cibu Shang High Volumizing Mousse. And if that’s just too subtle for you…since I don’t have any modeling aspirations anyway, I guess there’s no love lost between us.
So, what do you think about this newest hair craze on the runway?

Hi Brook great post! I really love the look of large hair personally. If I knew how to do it correctly I probably would! I try teasing my hair once in a while, but it never looks the same as that runway hair. But I do love this trend!

I love the extreme looks that are put forth in run way shows. They’re supposed to be surreal and larger than life, yet hold the inspiration to bring the trend back to an everyday look. I’m sure this will translate back to the streets in some high volume hair, but not quite so wild.
Might I add, that second picture is goooorgeous!

I agree with Eksy - Runway doesn’t usually literally translate to the streets, so this might mean a more chilled out version of messy, bedhead, higher than normal volumed hair. I love that!

I found this article on the web, and must say some old styles are comming back in fashion. Although hair designers face great problems due to some side effects of such treatments, I think suregries like hair restoration have made life easy for those who love to try such hair styles.
Finally a great post. Keep it up!
