Makeup 101 by Bobbi Brown

Posted by Andrea at 12:24 pm

Makeup artist to the stars, entrepreneur and author, Bobbi Brown has come out with a new book, Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual.  This book is a compilation of Bobbi Brown’s career in the makeup industry and is divided into two sections- Basics and Artistry

Basics covers everything from essential tools to Bobbi’s Ten Step Guide to Perfect Makeup. Section two, Artistry, is a complete “how- to” guide on breaking into the industry and ends with memorable makeup moments and legends.

My fellow Beauty Chatter, Jennifer, and I decided to try out a couple of application techniques from the book.  I wanted to learn how to choose the most flattering lip shades for my skin tone.  Jennifer was interested in incorporating color into her daily makeup regiment.

We decided to visit our local Bobbi Brown cosmetics counter to learn these techniques using Bobbi Brown products. This is where we met Shelly, our extremely helpful Bobbi Brown Makeup Artist.

Here is my take on the experience and what I learned:

“I’ve never been one to wear lipstick or colored gloss. It has always been clear gloss or lip balm for me.  So I was interested in learning how to choose the right lip colors for my skin tone.  For a neutral day look, I learned to choose a color one shade darker than my natural lip color and to use lip liner after the lipstick or gloss is applied for softer lines.  For a vamped up red lip, choose a shade of red with the same undertones (yellow or red) as the skin tone.”

And here’s what Jennifer had to say:

“I loved everything that was used on my face. It’s really hard for me to find a foundation that matches my skin tone and this one worked great. And the way she incorporated the colors on my eyes was perfect, not too much but just bright enough for daily use. I’ve always stuck to neutral colors – browns and creams – but now I’m not afraid to add a little color.”

Bobbi Brown was absolutely right when she says that this book, Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual, is “For Everyone from Beginner to Pro,” and with Shelly’s help with the makeup, we were able to get the full Bobbi Brown experience.

If you would like to have your own “Bobbi Brown Experience” Beauty Chat is giving five of our readers a copy of Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual.  Just leave a comment telling us what “tricks of the trade” you would like to learn more about.  The winners will be announced February 16th.  Good luck everyone!!

Hey your winner announcement is on my Birthday!!! Yay!
It’s not really a trick, but I found having a really basic primer on my eyes really makes any color eye shadow more vivid and stay on throughout the whole day. I also found this really great product that makes any powdered eye shadow a liquid liner…you can find it at Pauladorf.com I think it’s a life saver for me…I never had good luck with pencils…

I would like more tips on dealing with my “non-existant” eyebrows. They are extremely sparse and pale and I have been drawing them in with pencil and setting them with powder for years. I look really weird without any thing on them, but wonder if there might be a way to make them look more natural. I even had them tattooed at one time several years ago, but the ink faded from exfoliating my face so often. Now, I’m right back where I started-ET City! I figure that if anyone would know how to fix my problem, it would be Bobbi Brown!

I’m an on the go Mom and I would love to learn how to get a nice “natural” look that will even out my skin tone and not make me look like I am wearing three pounds of make-up. I’v always wanted to have nice multi-shade eye make-up but feel like I look a little weird when I try to do it. I need Bobbi’s help!

What a great give away! I would love to learn how to find the perfect foundation for my skin. I am a very pale blonde that hates to be pale. So of course you will see a tan “looking” face and a white neck. Not so attractive!! Hope to win! Thanks

    Hi Ladies!
I’ve been dying to learn how to use bronzer! I have fair skin and always steer clear of bronzer because I don’t want to look like I just got sun burnt. It would be nice to learn how to achieve that golden glow without actually getting a tan!

Hi, am ur new follower, Divija. Found ur blog last nite searching for Bobbi brown. I am a newbie, so not sure about how to qualify for the give-aways. But, no harm in trying, right? I am in…

I love trying natural looks using minimum makeup, as minimum as possible. Less is more, I believe. I wud love to finish my routine in a couple of minutes using the basics, that would be revolutionary for me :)

    glad to find ur blog!
