February 14th, some of you may call it Valentine’s Day, but those flying solo may refer to it as “Single’s Awareness Day”- whatever your reference to this day may be, despite your belief in its meaning, don’t let this day discourage you from having a good time-alone or attached.
As an unbeliever of what this day really means, I am not the type of girl to make a big deal about “V” day. There is a lot of history behind it, which I do find interesting, so I try not to be a party pooper and usually take advantage of what some may call the “Hallmark Greeting Card” holiday.
With that said; typically Valentine’s Day is celebrated by the exchange of gifts, flowers, candy, and/or greeting cards, but as your not so “traditional” girl and not being a huge fan of clichés, I came up with some ideas you can do alone or with your honey.
To make this Valentine’s Day different and special, you may want to consider the following:
*Organize a Girl’s Night Out (or Guy’s Night Out): Round up all your single friends and cause ruckus on the town (haha, just kidding). Go out for drinks and dancing. Get creative; there are plenty of things to do – go to a concert, a jazz club, etc.
*Throw a Single’s Awareness Party: If you are spending Valentine’s Day alone, why not round up other singles and make a night out of it? Get some drinks, snacks, and lots of anti-Valentine’s Days followers and have yourself a little party!
*Plan a Game Night: Right hand blue, left hand green; remember Twister? Get some friends together or even with your significant other and have game night. One of my favorite games to pla
y with a group of friends is Apples to Apples- it’s a game of hilarious comparisons.
*Have a Classics Movie night: Take advantage of the romantic innuendos of Valentine’s Day and turn it into a classic “romantic” movie night/day. Some of my classical favorites include Gone with the Wind, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Singing in the Rain. Add popcorn and comfy blankets, grab a spot on the couch, relax, and vegetate.
*Host a Murder Mystery Party: If you can get a group of friends who love adventure, you can host a murder mystery party. They are fun and interactive for everyone; if you can’t create your own, there are plenty of kits you can buy online. For ideas, check out Evite.com’s Murder Mystery Party Ideas.
*Tune into the All-Star Games: If all else fails for your weekend, help cheer on Phil Jackson while he is running the side-lines for the Western Conference All-Star Team. As a huge Lakers fan, I think it is important to tune into the 2009 NBA All-Star Games to cheer on Kobe and Gasol as they battle the Eastern Conference Team (It’s just a suggestion).
Whatever you call it – Valentine’s Day, Single’s Awareness Day, or Hallmark Greeting Card Day – just make it your day and have fun with it.
